We took a little trip over to Maryland and while there we hand-selected the tops, backs, necks, fretboards, hardware, etc… basically every single detail of the guitar was precisely calculated for the perfect aesthetics, playability, and tone.
If you were a fan of the PRS 408 or if you ever felt like the Custom 24 needed even more versatility than it already had, then this guitar has your name all over it! PRS’s new Custom 24-08 is a hybrid of the flagship Custom 24 model with some of the pickup combinations offered in the 408 so that you can literally achieve any combination of humbucking and/or single-coil modes out of the 85/15 pickups in this beauty.
The quilt maple top is mesmerizing. We really dig how this one came out with just a splash of color. It’s definitely a lean, mean, shredding machine! The natural back and flame maple neck complement the front of the guitar wonderfully and the swamp ash body has some killer figuring as well. Ziricote has always been one of our favorite looking fretboards. It sounds like a mix between Brazilian rosewood and ebony and has some nice figuring to it. From top to bottom, and from front to back, there’s no shortage of eye candy built into this guitar. The satin finish on the body and the neck look beautiful, but also feel amazing!
While they say looks can be deceiving… That’s not the case here. This guitar looks beautiful and has the playability and tone to back that up all day and all night. The combination of the maple neck, ziricote fretboard, and swamp ash body is going to make this guitar sound a bit snappier and brighter than one with mahogany and rosewood, for example. The ziricote fretboard is very dense and has a tone that is a cross between rosewood and ebony, to our ears. But even with all of that maple and swamp ash on the guitar, it still has some nice warmth to it.
We fly all the way across the country several times a year to do this so that we are personally going out there and choosing the very best of the wood selection that PRS has to offer. We pour a lot of passion into each design that we come up with together with the wonderful team over at PRS. The goal is always to design instruments that are not only unique and look beautiful, but also sound absolutely phenomenal.

The Custom 24 is the quintessential PRS guitar, the iconic instrument that started it all back in 1985. Featuring mini-toggle coil tap switches (like the PRS 408 model), the Custom 24-08 has eight different pickup settings that provide an array of humbucking and single-coil tones, including a dual single-coil option unique for this model. It’s All in the Details: TCI-Tuned Pickups
Paul Reed Smith is known as a man who studies history, scrutinizes the details, and never stops applying what he learns to his own instruments. It is that passion, care, and tenacity that has permeated PRS Guitars’ culture and led to the constant evolution of PRS products. Last year, PRS announced TCI (tuned capacitance and inductance) pickups on the Paul’s Guitar. But, TCI is more than a pickup, it’s a process. That process has now been applied to all PRS pickups offered on our Core line of instruments, with the exception of a few artist Signature models.
“TCI stands for Tuned Capacitance Inductance. When you wind a pickup, the coils are capacitors, resistors, and inductors simultaneously. Our more refined ability to be able to tune those factors is what we have incorporated into TCI pickups,” said Paul Reed Smith. “To our ears, the results are very musical. We are very proud of how far we’ve come in the understanding and making of pickups. It’s been a fun process.”
PATTERN NECK SHAPES
Neck shapes have always been a high priority for PRS and a hallmark of our quality. A guitar should feel comfortable, like “home,” as soon as you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. These new neck shapes reflect modern tooling and programming that allows us to even more preciously shape and consistently reproduce our necks. The “Pattern Thin” neck is an updated version of PRS’s traditional Wide Thin neck.
